How much moxie does it take to start up a book publishing house in the midst of the world's deepest recession? One can only assume that Jordana Woodland, who at 28 is the youngest female owner of a brick and mortar publishing house in the United States, launched her Pixie Press Worldwide in 2009 because she had something to say.

And she speaks volumes with her first public foray -- "About Face," a limited run high-end photography book by celebrity lens man John Russo that captures more than 100 Hollywood male actors and models. Russo shot them in black and white with the soon-to-be extinct Type 55 Polaroid film, creating an emotionally sensual collection that is coffee-table worthy. A portion of sales is being donated to the charity Smile Train, which performs free cleft lip and palate surgeries on children around the world.

All of the participants in "About Face," who include Jason Lewis from "Sex in the City," Taylor Kitsch of "Friday Night Lights," Ian Somerhalder of "The Vampire Diaries," and Giles Marini of "Brothers & Sisters," volunteered to pose for Russo. All were shot in natural light and without makeup. The creative mission, said Woodland, was to "record the raw beauty, intrigue and power of the male face."

The cloth-bound, 160-page edition is being sold for $95, signed by the photographer. It is available through www.PixiePressWorldwide.com, Amazon.com, and at the Minotti showroom in West Hollywood.
Prada, the book, is a well edited collection of images that documents 30 years of the respected Italian fashion house. From stills taken from short films showcasing the craftsmanship of the factory, collages of the brand's most iconic and influential accessories, to runway photos, images - unfortunately thumbnails - of over 3,000 looks, store designs and a photo essay by renowned photographer Brigitte Lacombe - this book is complete eye candy for any fashion enthusiast. Price: $136. Or $80 at here.
Prada: The Book originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 06 Mar 2010 14:01:00 EST. This interesting publication is certainly not safe for the family room. Dating back literally hundreds of years, Japan (among other cultures actually) has a history for high quality erotic art. Much of it was produced during the ukiyo-e period that ranged from the 17th - 19th century. The art has a feeling just as you would expect from traditional Japanese art, and much of the work was done by some of their major famous historic artists - such as Hokusai, Utamaro, and Kuniyoshi. Those instead of a large wave, fishing boat, or calm mountain scene, these paintings are are taboo defying images of sexuality and hidden passions from a culture that mostly repressed such thoughts from being publicly discussed. The images here are "safe for all eyes," but not that the majority of these works are for adults only. This is old-world Japan hentai - a sexually charged art style popular in Japan today.

This classic art (known as Shunga, or "spring images") and stories from this era were contained in "pillow books." Pillow books had a variety of purposes similar to what we would use such imagery today - to inform, entertain, and of course arouse. The difference is the quality of the work being on par with the era's finest paintings and other master works. Shunga works were mostly originally done on wood, and are great collector's item all over the world. In the upcoming publication Poem of the Pillow and Other Great Stories: Erotic Japanese Art by Utamaro, Hokusai, Kuniyoshi and other artists of the Floating World, by Phaidon Press, much of this famous art is collected in one source. The book will have 350 full color images done in Phaidon's typical high quality style. The 384 page, beautifully presented book will be available soon and comes with a large erotic scene image by Utamaro that can be framed. Price is just $49.95 and available in June.
Lacoste: The Element of Style, a smashing new book dedicated to the famed French brand about to be published by Assouline, covers much more than just sport shirts; it's about savoir vivre and savoir faire, literally "how to live" and "how to be" with plenty of style. It's designed to illuminate the contemporary relevance of the legacy of René Lacoste, the brand's founder who was the best tennis player in the world at the end of the Roaring Twenties. Nicknamed "Le Crocodile" for his tenacity on the court he began sporting an alligator patch on his blazers starting in 1927, which then became the basis for the sportswear brand he founded in 1933, one of the first labels to marry American functionality with European elegance. He also designed tennis rackets and other equipment, filing 25 patents during his lifetime.

The logo was applied to the easy breathing piqué sports shirts Lacoste favored, which helped him to cope with the heat on American tennis courts. It was a major revolution for players, who until then had worn starched, long-sleeve dress shirts even on the hottest days. The book comes in various different colors, a nod to the fact that Lacoste began producing its shirts in dozens of different shades well before anyone else caught the color bug. Until the 1950s, only white polos and shirts were allowed on tennis courts, but beginning in 1951, the company dared to add contrasting elements in navy blue, then red. That helped revitalize fashion both on and off the courts and presaged the color explosion of the 1960s.
In March Rizzoli will publish an updated version of Roger G. Kennedy's stunning volume Greek Revival America, originally issued 20 years ago and still the landmark lavishly illustrated work on the subject. Kennedy provides an enriching look into the past to explain the reasons for the much-admired architecture movement in America and describes the political landscape of the period before, during, and after the Greek Revival era in a compelling narrative. With hundreds of full-color photographs specially commissioned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation along with illuminating illustrations, the book demonstrates the lasting importance of the Greek style and its impact in America evidenced in iconic buildings including churches, banks, government offices and private estates. Also included is a new preface and an updated appendix of every important surviving Greek Revival structure in the United States today. Cawdor Castle, one of Scotland's greatest estates which dates back to 1380, is the centerpiece of a beautiful new book focusing on the very best of Scottish style. Highland Living: Landscape, Style, and Traditions of Scotland (Flammarion, $39.95) by Stéphane Bern and Franck Ferrand with photographs by Guillaume de Laubier opens with a foreword by the castle's formidable mistress, Angelika, the Dowager Countess Cawdor (above). Born in Bohemia and raised in Africa, the exotic beauty was a fashion editor at Vogue and directed a marketing company in Paris before marrying the late Hugh, 6th Earl Cawdor and 24th Thane, and falling in love with the Scottish Highlands. In 30 years at Cawdor she has given new life to the legendary estate while preserving its historic heritage and way of Highland living.

At the heart of Scotland lies the legendary Cawdor Castle, best known for its literary connection to William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, the title character of which was made Thane of Cawdor. With its rich history, vibrant grounds and deep lochs, ancient, stony ruins, stewardship of revered traditions, and completely sustainable existence, the Cawdor estate, occupying over 49,000 acres, exemplifies the essence of the Highlands. Its magnificent interiors are filled with glorious antiques and handcrafted furniture, tartan accessories, hunting trophies and painted landscapes. Kilts and bagpipes, salmon and fly fishing, grouse shooting, hunting dogs, Land Rovers, shotguns and Barbour jackets, the shady realm of the Big Wood, thematic gardens, windswept moors, haggis and Scotch whisky are all part of life at the storied Castle.
England's great tradition of country houses spans 700 years, but reached its magnificent apex in the 19th century, Michael Hall demonstrates in his beautiful new book Lasting Elegance: English Country Houses 1830 - 1900 from Monacelli. The houses, designed by the most eminent architects of the age, were bigger, more elaborate, and more lavishly furnished than ever before, Hall notes. The English country house became a byword throughout Europe and in America for luxury, technological innovation, and convenience. Hall's opulently illustrated survey draws on the vast archive of the great British magazine Country Life to present the fullest visual record yet published of the Victorian-era country house in England and Wales. The photographs contained in the book are in many cases the only record of great houses in their heyday, such as Orchardleigh in Somerset, Hewell Grange in Worcestershire, Thoresby Hall in Nottinghamshire, and Stokesay Court in Shropshire - featured in the 2007 award-winning film Atonement - all sold in the 20th century and their contents dispersed.
The Best Victorian Country Houses in England originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 16:01:00 EST. Ever since Broad decided in 2008 that he wouldn't be installing his 2,000 work contemporary art collection at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, the question of where he would establish his own museum has been up in the air. First it seemed that he might head to Beverly Hills or Santa Monica but the latest info from the LA Times seems to indicate the potential for a downtown move.

Broad's museum could end up as part of the ambitious, Frank Gehry-designed Grand Avenue project. Broad has long been a supporter of the development which would revitalize the heart of downtown's arts district with hotels, condos and retail space. Until recently Broad was a member of the committee overseeing the project on behalf of the Grand Avenue Authority but he resigned a few months ago, clearing the way for his transition into being a possible part of the project. The Grand Avenue Authority has said they will be considering a proposal from the Broad Foundation. As the LA Times points out, the project has stalled out in the face of the economic decline when the developer was unable to get a multibillion-dollar construction loan. If Broad chooses to put his museum here it will be in good company, Disney Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art and other cultural venues are located nearby. Broad, who is 76, is likely mindful of the story of another famous art collector, the late Donald Fisher who recently died without having secured plans for his museum. Broad isn't going anywhere but this museum is his legacy to the city of Los Angeles and I'm sure he is eager that it find a good home soon.

Where Will Eli Broad's Museum Land? originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 19:01:00 EST. "Porsche means looking at the world from a different angle. The fact that, unlike other cars, the ignition switch is located to the left of the steering wheel is just one indication that this company, these sports cars and this family are different from other automobile dynasties." Thus begins Generation Porsche, a brilliant new volume published by teNeues in the wake of the opening of the new Porsche Museum at Zuffenhausen's Porscheplatz in Stuttgart. The most comprehensive and best-designed pictorial history of the marque we've seen to date, it contains a brilliantly curated collection of artfully layered images, taking full advantage of the museum's archives and displays showing how three generations of the Porsche family have defined automobile history, and in particular the saga of the sports car. Until you can actually get over to Germany, this book is the next best thing.

The famed marque officially celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, but its history in fact goes back 110 years to 1900 and 24-year-old Ferdinand Porsche's visionary Lohner electric car concept, debuted at that year's World's Fair in Paris; that's where Generation Porsche kicks off. In merging the highest standards of design with advanced technology, Porsche has since become a byword for four-wheeled works of art, ranking among the most coveted cars in the world. As avid Porsche collector Jerry Seinfeld puts it, "Driving a Porsche always gives you a futuristic feeling." The high-tech museum certainly conveys that. Construction began on the building, designed to be an architectural emblem of the Porsche brand, in October 2005, making history as the most spectacular building project ever undertaken by the company. In addition to 80 ever-changing exhibits, the museum also features workshops, a Porsche boutique, the Porsche archive, a restaurant, a café and event space.
Meanwhile teNeues has published a second work entitled Porsche Icons, showcasing the influence and history of the legendary Type 64, one of the most mysterious yet influential car designs ever, which many consider to be the first true Porsche. Ferdinand Porsche established an independent engineering office in Stuttgart in 1931 and went on to make automotive history with pioneering developments in motorsports. Over the next several decades Porsche introduced innovative production models such as the 356, 911, 914, 924, 944, 928, the Boxster, the Cayenne, and, most recently, the four-door Panamera, while continuing its strong showing in the world's most important auto races. We were delighted when L'Oreal offered to send us a copy of the 5-book boxed set 100,000 Years of Beauty, a book created for their 100th Anniversary. We at Luxist have a passionate relationship with beauty.

100,000 Years of Beauty takes you on a fact-filled journey of eye candy through Prehistory, Antiquity, Classical Age, Modernity and even shows you a peek at the projected Future. Each book showcases and discusses what the world sees/saw/will see as beauty. For example, in Modernity, stories of the struggle for social equality between races and genders are told alongside breathtaking images of Olympic athletes, Brando in a t-shirt, naughty postcards, Bollywood, Miss America contestants and more. Any one of these books would be a welcome addition to your coffee table, and in their fixed stack (the dark shell doesn't come apart), they make an attractive element of decor.

Like with many coffee table books, the text can be somewhat dense, but the books are an arranged series of articles with different authors -- 300 of them, artists, historians, philosophers, anthropologists and other specialists of 35 different nationalities -- allowing you to skip around to find a voice you like. The story the books ultimately tell is one of 100,000 years of striving for beauty all over the world. It puts our fashions, media ideals (both healthy and unhealthy) and uncomfortable shoes into an interesting perspective; people have been suffering for beauty universally for centuries. The concept of that quest becomes more honorable; the suffering looks less shallow. There are few inherent goals of mankind -- one seems to be justice, and another is beauty.

With Valentine's Day coming up, this book would make an excellent gift for a friend (though we still recommend jewelry for your significant other), or even a young woman in her teens. Poring over 100,000 Years of Beauty could broaden a young mind, enrich their appreciation of art and calm their personal anxieties about their own appearance; how they fit into our current ideals.
This book takes us inside the apartments facing the broad boulevard with a European feel, to tell us, if not everything, then just enough, to entertain Park Avenue style. Hint: there may be a cook for hire involved, and you'll want to get out the china, write place cards, and dust off the napkin rings. As for what you'll be serving: The ladies are not cutting-edge professional chefs, so this is not the place to find culinary revelations on par with "Momofuko." Rather the recipes are for comforting dishes, not too healthy or unhealthy, and presented simply but beautifully. Vetted by New York Times food writer Florence Fabricant, these are gold-plated go-to dishes. And some, such as Coco Kopelman's baked latkes, are a real find.
Continue reading Silver Spoons and Party Tips From Park Avenue

Silver Spoons and Party Tips From Park Avenue originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 11:01:00 EST. For six decades Scottish-born photographer Harry Benson has enjoyed incomparable access to the most elusive, alluring, and enduring legends of our time. His new book, Harry Benson: Photographs, just published by powerHouse, is a visual celebration of an incredible career spanning the globe and all realms of pop culture, celebrity, art, fashion, sports, politics, and photojournalism. He has photographed every US president since Eisenhower, as well as Robert F. Kennedy on the night he was assassinated, and Martin Luther King Jr. at his funeral; he has shot stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Greta Garbo, and Truman Capote; and he covered both the rise and fall of the Berlin wall, the Watts riots, 9/11, and several wars. The book includes scores of iconic images alongside never-before-published photographs of Sir Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Muhammad Ali, the Beatles, Sophia Loren, Kate Moss, Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando, Alfred Hitchcock, Andy Warhol and many more.
The Photographs of Harry Benson originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 05 Jan 2010 11:01:00 EST. Now some of the Vatican's documents have been revealed in a new book, The Vatican Secret Archives. The 252-page book is full of color photos and represents a chronological journey through the meandering history of the past centuries starting with the Liber Diurnus Romanorum Pontificum, an old book containing formulas in use by the Papal Chancellery dating back to the end of the 8th or the beginning of the 9th century. Other documents include a letter from Mary Queen of Scots to Pope Sixtus V, a letter from Pius X to Hitler, and works from saints include St. Teresa of Avila.

The regular book is available from Amazon.com and other sources for around $100. But for the truly dedicated collector there is a limited edition of 33 which is handbound in the studio of the Vatican Secret Archives. The books will be printed on felt and handstitched with leather ties. Collectors editions will be numbered, stamped and certified. Each book will be made by request and can be ordered in Italian, English, French or Dutch and can be personalized. It sells for € 4,950. "I'm never shy with Rankin," Klum says.

Kate Moss has also been snapped by the master in her birthday suit many times; some of the images are featured in the book. "Any time Rankin takes a picture he knows what he wants, and there is really no chance of being anyone but who you are, even if you try," she notes. "You can trust him. I trust him."
The Cheekiest Book of the Year originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 14:01:00 EST.
Art Deco, considered by many to be the most glamorous decorative arts style, shaped popular ideas of modern luxury in the 1920s and '30s. Alastair Duncan's invaluable new book Art Deco Complete covers everything that falls under that moniker, from furniture and interior decor to sculpture, paintings, graphics, posters, bookbinding, glass, ceramics, lighting, textiles, metalwork, and jewelry. Designed to be the most comprehensive guide of the movement ever published, it features over 1,000 full-color images and illustrations of classic Art Deco spaces and objects, accompanied by biographies of the most influential artists and designers of the era. Duncan was for years the expert who ran the 20th century decorative arts department at Christie's New York, so he knows what he's talking about.
